Lady Edith’s London Nights & Tea With Lady Grantham Patterns

CLICK ON PHOTO TO PURCHASE “LADY EDITH’S LONDON NIGHTS” PATTERN $5.00

Lady Edith’s London Nights Shawl pattern is now available as a paid pdf download.  As with some other patterns I’ve designed, it was free to follow along on my blog, row by row, as I designed it.  Once these “work along with me” patterns are complete I leave the free version online for a few days (or a few weeks) until I consolidate it into a pdf file:  then the free online version is removed, and the paid Instant Download Pdf file becomes available.

I’d like to thank designer of the Jimmy Beans Wool “Downton Abbey 2014 KAL” shawl, Kristen Ashbaugh-Helmreich, who graciously gave me permission to design a crocheted version of her shawl, inspired by its shape and style. If you have any questions about the crochet shawl “Lady Edith’s London Nights” please message me, not Kristen, as she did not participate in the design of these crocheted shawls and would not be able to help you–nor have the time to!

This crocheted shawl was inspired in particular by the dynamic personality of Lady Edith Crowley. We see her personality mature and emerge as a strong, vibrant woman who embraces change and lives life with passion.

ALSO AVAILABLE:  Tea With Lady Grantham Shawl Pattern.  This design is the same shape as the Lady Edith shawl, but is a little larger.  It uses stitches that are based on double crochet, and has a more textured appearance as it uses back post and front post double crochet stitch patterns.  Like the other shawl it is made with fingering weight/sock weight yarn and a 3.5mm hook.

Please see my project page for the second shawl, Tea With Lady Grantham for photos/yarn information, and visit my blog for further photos and information. The Tea With Lady Grantham Shawl is based on (Canadian/US terms) double crochet stitch patterns, while Lady Edith’s London Nights is single crochet stitch patterns.

This pattern is written out row by row, and does not include charts. If you need any help, find errors, or would like to comment, please contact me here on Ravelry, on my blog, or on Facebook.

Downton Abbey Crochet Shawl

Tea with Lady Grantham pattern collage2

The “Tea With Lady Grantham Shawl” is now available to purchase for $5.00.  You can CLICK ON THE FIRST PHOTO to purchase it, visit the PATTERNS page here on the blog, or find it in my Ravelry Store (you do not have to be a Ravelry Member to purchase patterns there).

My love of the 19th and early-20th century eras also extends to my choice of reading material and the television shows and movies I watch! Therefore, I am a fan of the popular “Downton Abbey” series. One of the most wonderful characters in it is, I think, Violet Crawley—Lady Grantham. I first intended to name my shawl the “Tea With Lady Violet” Shawl but quickly realized how it may offend her sense of etiquette, as her proper title is not ”Lady Violet” but “Lady Grantham.”

This crescent shaped shawl uses about 1200 m of fingering weight/sock weight yarn.  I used a 3.5mm hook.  The finished size is approximately 10″ deep, 52″ neck edge, 128″ bottom edge, and the unique shape makes it very versatile for wearing different ways–as a wrap, a scarf, a shawl, etc.  It will look fabulous with jeans, but would be a perfect accessory for a summer wedding too.

If you love this shape and style, the “Lady Edith’s London Nights Shawl” is also available as a pdf pattern! While Tea With Lady Grantham is based on double crochet stitch patterns, the Lady Edith’s London Nights uses single crochet as a base.  If you look back in my posts, I published several free cloth patterns to practice some of the stitches used in these shawls.  I will also have a pattern-pack of cloths available soon as a paid pdf download, if you want to make Downton Abbey Cloths and like the convenience of a pdf.

There are only 2 rows left now to finish the Lady Edith’s London Nights Shawl.  I will add more photos after I have washed and blocked it, but here is one photo to show you the edging. I worked crab stitch up the short edge of the shawl.

Lady Edith edging

Please remember that this shawl will be available to purchase as a paid instant pdf download in a few days, at which time all the Rows now posted online will be removed.  I have had no indication that anyone is actually making this shawl as not one viewer has commented, contacted me, etc., but if you are making the shawl please make sure you write out the rows soon, if you do  not care to purchase the pattern compiled into a short document instead of spread out over several posts! Please remember that this pattern is COPYRIGHT and sharing it in any format is not allowed.  Please link to my website if you want to share my patterns or information.

And, as always, please write to me here, using the contact form at the bottom of the post, or on Facebook or Ravelry, if you need any help or find any errors–or have any comments.  If you make this, or any of my designs, I’d love to see photos of your work–you can post them on Facebook–and link to my design/add it to Favourites on Ravelry.  Thanks for your interest in my patterns!

*****CANADIAN/US CROCHET TERMS USED*****

sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet;  ch = chain;  inc = increase; dec = decrease; * to * = repeat the instructions between the * – *

sc4 = make 1 single crochet in each  of the next 4 (or other number given; and of course ‘dc4′ would mean ‘double crochet 4,’ etc.)

fpdc = front post double crochet; bpdc = back post double crochet

v-stitch = (dc, ch1, dc) all in the same stitch or in a ch 1 space–often in the centre ch1 of v-stitch the previous row, when I will say “v-stitch in v-stitch.”

Shell stitch= (2dc, ch2, 2dc) all in the same stitch

NOTES:  I used ALL of 4 balls of Lang Yarns “Jawoll Cotton” (45 g=191 yards, so I used 764 yards).  If you find yourself running short of yarn near the end:

1. you can use a contrast colour for the edging (the last 2 rows) or even starting with Row 45—the ch3 loops blend into the border.

2. you can stop after Row 50, as the Shell Stitch makes a very nice edging by itself, as this photo shows:

Lady Edith shell stitch

NOTE ABOUT THE EDGING:  The Edging is a modified version of a pattern in a booklet called Edgings: 100 Old and New Favourites–original price, 15 cents–published by The Canadian Spool Cotton Company in 1945.

ALSO AVAILABLE ON RAVELRY

Crochet a versatile Downton Abbey inspired shawl! The pattern is now available as a paid pdf download.  The pattern is no longer free in a week-by-week format.  More crochet/knit-with-me-while-I-design patterns will be coming soon.  They are free only while I design the pattern, and once finished they become paid patterns.  They will be announced first on my Facebook Page, G+, Twitter, & Pinterest.

tea with lady grantham and Lady edith

Tea With Lady Grantham is the same shape and size as the “Lady Edith’s London Nights” shawl/wrap.

Are you a knitter, as well as crocheter?  If so, you will want to make the knitted Downton Abbey Mystery KAL 2014, the design by Kristen Ashbaugh-Helmreich that inspired the shape and textures of this crocheted shawl.  Check out all the projects and the Jimmy Beans Wool Group on Ravelry, where there are lots of photos to inspire your yarn choices if you knit one!  Ravelry is free to join, and you’ll find thousands of patterns, groups for help and company, and inspiration for your next project.

Don’t forget, though, that the knitted Downton Abbey Mystery KAL 2014 shawl uses worsted weight yarn.  I did  not use worsted weight for my crochet shawls–crochet stitches are much denser and larger than knit stitches, and to get the same size as my shawls (Lady Grantham and the Lady Edith’s London Nights) you must use a sock/fingering weight yarn.  As I have learned, the stitch definition tends to be ‘lost’ in the multi-coloured yarn I used for Lady Edith, so when you are choosing a yarn remember that a lighter coloured, solid-coloured yarn will show the stitch textures more than a hand-painted or multi-colour yarn.  Your LYS is a great place to ask for help in choosing yarns!

IF YOU MAKE THIS SHAWL, PLEASE MARK IT AS A FAVOURITE IN RAVELRY AND LINK IT TO MY DESIGN PAGE–THANKS!  YOU CAN ALSO POST PHOTOS AND COMMENTS ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE IF YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE OR IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.

FOR GAUGE, YARN WEIGHT SUGGESTION AND HOOK INFORMATION SEE EARLIER POST.  IF YOU FIND AN ERROR, PLEASE SEND A MESSAGE ON THE CONTACT FORM HERE, OR ON RAVELRY, OR ON FACEBOOK.  IF YOU NEED HELP, PLEASE ASK ME.
