Happy Canada Day!

1884 Canadian Skating Cap

Adapted from an 1884 Dorcas Magazine pattern, the “Canadian Skating Cap” is easy and quick to knit. Like the popular Victorian “Canadian Cloud” stoles, it used large needles and small yarn, making it light and airy enough that it did not crush the intricate curls and ringlets hairdressing of the day required ‘ladies’ to adopt.

My version uses fingering weight wool—’Tove’ by SandnesGarn—and 8mm needles. One 50g ball is sufficient.

Cast on 40 stitches.

Row 1. Knit across the row.

Row 2. Slip 1 stitch purlwise with wool in front, then put wool to back again; *knit 1, purl 1*, repeat to last stitch, knit 1 through the back loop.

Row 3. Slip 1 stitch purlwise with wool in front, leave wool in front; * purl 1, knit 1*, repeat to last stitch, knit 1 through the back loop.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until 100 rows are done. Cast off.

To make up: sew the cast off and cast on edges together. Using a bodkin, run a stitch around the top edge, then pull it tight to gather; fasten the yarn. Now fold the top down over the CO/BO seam. Sew the middle of the ribbon to the gathered ‘point’ then tie it in a bow. The ribbon ends will stream behind you as you glide gracefully across the ice . Alternately, adorn with a large button and/or crocheted flower. My cap has a button sewn on. My boon companion, Midas, is handsome in purple…a royal colour befitting a King.
